Monday Happy

November 21, 2022 Colleen Stem

The days are short, it’s been cold and we got a good little dump of snow that has stuck around a bit. This is when I thrive in life. Seriously though, the morning it snowed I felt the happiest, most grounded in life that I have felt in a while. I was so excited that I ran a few extra miles on my run just to be out in the snow. It was super fantastic and I don’t want to hear anyone bitching about winter right now, mainly cause I don’t want to hear anyone bitch about anything period. HA!

So it’s Monday and not Sunday but we are ok here, just kinda super busy. Sure I have spent more time in the studio then not and I am wildly stressed but really it is all good and I actually love it. (Not that I am not looking forward to a few weeks off once all the markets are over). Besides that we had the family Thanksgiving over the weekend so 25ish people packed into the house. It was everyone eating food all over, talking to my face while I was maneuvering hot dishes, small children running around, everyone asking all the question about the dikon radishes, and talk about Christmas… Whoa was that great but all a bit much. I love my family and love that we do the holidays here at my house but man are those butt holes messy! I spent half of my day yesterday wiping, vacuuming, moping and re-vacuuming every surface in the house. It was nasty, especially the bathroom. I think sometimes people forget that pee goes INTO the toilet and not all over it.

Yup, that is about it. And it is Monday which means that I have less then a week to get all my pots finished, packed, and ready to go to market this weekend. I am gonna be wild and have already informed the mr to just let me be and maybe not get to close or else I might bite.

He can]t say I didn’t warn him.

Sunday Happy

July 31, 2022 Colleen Stem

Is it really the last day of July? Are we happy about that? I know I am because it means August, then September and hopefully that means it will not be so hot. And also it means apples and pumpkins and sweaters and I will stop now because it is only the last day of July. HA!

The week. It was a weeeeek. In a good way, or mostly good but also kind of frantic and maybe a little bit stressful, but good. We started off camping and this time we brought the crew. Took them into the woods, rented there pampered little butts a lean-to (it was actually a good thing because it poured that night) and basically spent the entire day either in the water, on the water, eating, or playing with fire. All the exact things one should do will camping. And after a long day of all the fun that was had, they all conched out in the lean-to (the mr and I split in out tent outside the lean-to) and the sky opened up with thundered and lightning and poured all the water. A grand storm and boy were were glad for the kids being in the lean-to. I don’t think we would have made it through the night if they were in their tent. But they did and woke up rested, ate a extremely large amount of food, played in the rain, and then claimed exhaustion and needed to get home. Got them packed and home by late morning, the sky cleared, the sun came out, and it got hot. Blah.

Then the rest of the week was go go go. I loaded and unloaded like 3 kilns madly glazed more pot, threw a shit ton more, and tried on several different occasions (3 TIMES and all fails) to get shit my cards printed out at Staples. Basically running around with my head cut off but whats really new. The mr and I did manage a few minutes together at points, we even took Meg, Miley, and Bean to the farm to pick flowers, but mostly we were bot just busy busy.

Then Saturday was market day. I (and the mr) unpacked, set up and I slung those pots. Saw a ton of people, sold a bunch of my favorites, and handed out the flowers. There was music, free ice cream, and people riding around on bikes dresses as unicorns. All I call, another fantastic successful market. And then we came home, unpacked the pots and stuff, repacked the camping stuff, and crashed.

Sunday. Well I am beat ass tired but no problem because CAMPING and even in y worst state, camping always is the answer. But first we are going to a 1 year olds birthday party which should be fun, if not a little more tiring. I think I will make it. (I just hope no one expects much more then my presence because my brain is mushy and I’ll be moving around like a sloth). So party frst, then camping, and then hopefully a chill evening of sitting by the fire reading followed by an uninterrupted 5-6 hours of deep sleep in the fresh air under a sky of stars. But before any of this can happen today I need to drink the entirety of a pot of coffee so that is what I am going to do.

Sunday Happy

July 24, 2022 Colleen Stem

This is the time of summer that hate or strongly dislike. The heat and humidity. All a bunch of bullshit. 😬

We went on our first camp of our camp season and I give it an A (not A+). Everything was perfect except that it was hot, like mother freaking stupid hot. So hot that when I made dinner (soup as always and forever) the mr refused to eat it .Me, well I ate it and dropped more sweat then I thought possible, So yeah it was stupid hot and yes we did go out in the kayaks at exactly the hottest part of the day (really bad choice) and sure I might have died a little but it was still all good. The stroll through the woods. The tiny little fire that I sat far far away from. My hot soup. All the stuff. And when we woke up the next morning the temperature had dropped enough to be a bit chilled, I made the coffee in a long sleeved shirt, walked to the pond for sunrise then packed up camp and home we headed.

Then the rest of the week. I blinked and it was over. First thing back I went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned all nice and shit. Then I basically spent the rest of the days running around with my head chopped off. I was in the studio almost everyday loading and unload kilns, glazing all the stuff, and helping transition the new studio manager to the place. Wasn’t so bad given the air condition and all because, as you might also be dealing with, a stupid ass heat wave. Whenever I was home I was miserable and bitchy and cursing the sun back to hell. The house felt like a furnace and I did not deal with it well. Not my finest moments as a human but I didn’t literally kill anyone so I consider that a victory.

Sunday! Not only ar we going camping but we are bringing the crew with us. The 3 littles, Barb, and the mr and I are heading out to the woods this morning to do what we do best. We will hike and swim. They will fish and I will read (or run around with Coco). Got the frisbee and nerf ball and playing cards. And we packed a ton of food (healthy and junk). There will be fire and s’mores and when the wake up the get the full on meal along with breakfast hot chocolate. Sure there is a chance it gonna rain all night but I really don’t care because summer camping rain is just fine by me. We won’t melt, I hope anyway.

It’s starting to feel like summer for real. On the one hand I am officially over the heat (and it has only barely begun), but on the other hand the flowers, tomatoes, and zucchini are really pulling their weight in life so I can’t be a complete asshole when I am picking all the lovely flowers eating the finest of produce…Or I can. Just ask the mr. Ha!

Basically I spent that past week either at the studio loading kilns and dealing with annoying stuff or in my basement studio, covered in clay, throwing pots. A marathon of making to have enough pieces for my next market and for a few stores. So yeah, my back is killing me, I have bruises on my arms from my wheel, and I am exhausted. When I go on benders like this my brain goes crazy with ideas, I can’t sleep, and I forget to like eat food and drink water. And the sick thing is that I love it.

I did manage myself a bit of time away from the clay. The littles came over and we went to the pool, ate food, and played some mean games of rock pepper scissors. (Those kids, they really are the coolest. And are getting way to old. I am officially scared.) I also picked the first zucchini and the first beans of the season from the garden, grabbed farmshare and picked flowers, pick raspberries from the yard…I guess I picked a lot of stuff this week. Yeah, a week of clay and picking. A pretty bitchin week.

And it is Sunday and were are kicking off CAMPING SEASON!!!. I am so stinking excited. They kayaks are in the truck, the camp stove and lentils are packed, and the firewood is loaded. I need this. The mr needs this. We are going to Groton where there are a few big ponds, lots of hiking, and no cell service. 24 hours of nope to anything other than the great outdoors. I mean doesn’t that sound delightful? I am so ready!

Some internet from the internet.

Ok so Its some of you may know I am not the biggest fan of summer. (to say the least.) But you know what, this summer so far has been pretty fantastic weather wise. Only a day or two of unbearable heat but mostly just super freaking nice. If this was how summer always was well then I might just really like summer.

And we blasted through another week. After last weekends market I thought I was chillin pretty for a few weeks but last minute was set up to be in na big art festival on Saturday. So basically I spent the week getting as much done (pottery is not a fast process) for that. Bedside running around with my head chopped off, I did other stuff. The mr and I went for a long bike ride. I went and picked myself a bucket of lovely flowers at the farm. I ate no less then 4 lbs of lettuce and spinach (our farm share is HUMONGOUS), had dinner with the fam at my moms, and fed Megan’s evil cat.

Saturday was the art festival. We woke up early, headed into the mountains on the finest summer day, set up, and slung those pots! People were all about being super awesome, many a pots went to new homes, and I damn near lost my voice from all the talking I did. The mr was with me the whole time, helping me set up, keeping hydrated, forcing me to eat, and letting me take a break to relieve my bladder. He is the best. And you know what else is the best, not having to repack most of the pots. Break down is always so much easier when the crates are empty. HA! (Thanks again to everyone that came out!)

Sunday. So we were going to start our camping adventures but we have pushed it back to next weekend due to the fact that I am exhausted, haven’t pulled out the tent and stuff, and I still need to unpack the car from the festival yesterday. Yes I am bummed but It’s ok, we still have like 15 or so more good weekends of camping coming our way. So instead we are going to go for a hike and then pick flowers down at the farm then I am going to unpack said car, eat some food sitting down, wash my hair like an adult, and go to bed early. It’s gonna be a long week of sitting at my wheel to get pots made for the next market. My back will probably hate me but I will love every second of it.
